The director switched on the lights. The visiting researcher gasped as the enormous room with ornate pillars came into view. In the center of the room, on a circular dais illuminated by additional spotlights, stood the beautiful display case. As the two approached, their footsteps echoed through the sacred chamber. The researcher began to tremble as they ascended the dais.

“We keep it in a moisture-free environment at a carefully controlled temperature for storage. We take great pride in being the first brewery of this great republic, and this document is evidence of our founding date. We have spent millions to ensure that it is stored safely for posterity.”

The researcher peered through the glass where the old scroll lay unfurled for viewing. Some of its edges were torn and curled, but otherwise it had survived the many centuries intact. The text was in the Old Language and in a cursive script unintelligible to all but a few.

“Would you like to have a closer look?” the director asked.

“Why yes. Yes, of course.”

He flipped a switch and the glass slid back. He removed a pair of gloves from a drawer for the researcher and put some on his own hands.

“Don’t be afraid. Here, you can handle it.”

The director held the left side while the researcher held the right side, studying the script closely.

“Sir, it says right here that your brewery was founded in 1192.”

“That’s correct. Our republic’s first!”

“But sir, in my research of the town’s archives, I found a document stating that the other brewery was founded in 1191.”

As the director fainted from the shock, he fell back still holding the left side of the scroll. It tore straight down the middle with a hiss that filled the chamber like steam being released.

Being first isn’t always that important. Still, in this issue, we highlight individuals and breweries that were among the first and most important in building out the craft beer scene in Japan. Ginga Kogen should be included, and arguably some others, but we’ll save them for later. In the meantime, let’s give thanks to these guys for their role in Japanese craft beer.

Drink better, drink craft.

醸造所の所長が部屋の明かりをつけた。施設を訪問した調査員は装飾が施された柱を備えたその部屋を息を殺して見つめた。広々とした部屋の中央には円形の台座があり、その上にはスポットライトに照らされて美しいガラスケースが鎮座している。部屋の中央に進む二人の靴音が神聖な部屋にコツコツと反響した。やがて台座に近づくにつれ、調査員の身体が小刻みに震え始めた。

「ケースの中は防湿で温度は一定に保たれています。我々はこの偉大な共和国にできた最初の醸造所であることに大きな誇りを持っています。ケースの中の文書に記されている内容を見ればこの醸造所が我が国最初の醸造所であることが分かるのです。我々はこの誇り高き記録文書の保存に万全を期すためにこれまで何百万ドルも掛けてきました」。

ガラスケースの中にある古い巻物は中身が読めるように展開してあり、調査員はガラス越しにそれを覗きこんだ。巻物は大変古いものであるために端の方が破れている個所があったが、何世紀もの間その形をほぼ原形のまま保ってきたのだ。古英語で書かれている上、草書体のためなおさら読みにくく、その内容は専門家以外はほとんど理解できなかった。

「もっと近くでお見せしましょうか？」と所長が調査員に訊いた。

「是非お願いします」

所長がなにやらスイッチを入れるとケースのガラスがスライドした。引き出しから手袋を出してきて調査員に渡すと自分も手袋をはめた。

「大丈夫です。どうぞ手に取ってご覧ください」

所長が巻物の左端を、調査員が右端を持ち、調査員はその文字を注意深く読んだ。

「所長。この醸造所は1192年に創業したとここに書いてありますよ」

「そうです。我々は我が国初の醸造所ですから！」

「しかし所長。町の公文書記録には、他の醸造所が1191年に創業したという記録がありましたが」

それを聞いた所長はショックのあまり気を失い、文書の端を掴んだまま後ろに倒れ込んだ。文書はビリビリという音を部屋中に響かせながら真ん中から真っ二つに破れてしまった・・・

最初であることはそんなに重要なことではないかもしれない。しかし今回本誌は日本のクラフトビア黎明期において、業界をリードする大きな役割を担ってきた何人かの醸造技師と醸造所にスポットを当てた。それらの醸造所には銀河高原ビールを始めいくつかの醸造所が含まれるが、その他の醸造所については次号以降に順次ご紹介していきたい。まず今回特集する醸造技師たちに日本のクラフトビア業界におけるその功績を称えて賛辞を送ろう。
