Czech-style Beer from Kobo

Word from the Czech Republic is that its 500+ breweries (for a population of just 10 million!) are seeing such a drastic drop in sales that they are having to dump millions of liters of their delicious golden brew. The very thought of it makes us want to cry, and kindles in us the desire for a malty, bitter, herbal Czech-style lager. Sadly, we won’t be getting any of that unconsumed beer, but there is a fantastic and authentic Czech pilsner brewed here in Japan, by Czech-born Jiri “Kotas” Kotynek of Kobo Brewery.

His beautiful, Japanese-style Toyama brewpub opened in mid-March–very unfortunate timing due to our present crisis. Kobo, however, has three different beers available by mail order: Premiant Pilsner, an authentic Czech svetly lezak brewed with Premiant hops; 3A Lager: American Amarillo Amber; and their American-style pale ale. All come in sturdy 500ml bottles. Mixed 6-packs are available, as are kegs for home consumption. Premiant Pilsner is especially recommended for people who have had enough hazy beer lately.
