日本は、世界のビール大会においてこれまでも優れた成績を収めてきた。特にワールド・ビア・アワードではその傾向が顕著に現れるようで、2007年から数々の賞を獲得している。日本の消費者の多くが、受賞したビールのラベルやSNSでの投稿、マーケティング資料などに誇らしげに飾られた受賞シールを見たことがあるだろう。今年の大会もエントリー受付中で、私たちとしてもぜひ多くのブルワリーに挑戦してもらいたいと思っている。それが何故か知りたい方はこのまま読み進めてほしい。
本大会は、厳しい基準のもとで行われるブラインドテイスティング形式の大会だ。最初のラウンド（各国ごとに行われる）では、審査員が10のカテゴリーそれぞれにおいて、日本のベストビールを選定する。カテゴリーには「ダークビール」「IPA」「ラガー」「スペシャルティビール」などがあり、それぞれさらに細かいスタイルに分かれている。IPAなら、インペリアル／ダブルIPA、セッションIPA、アメリカンスタイル、イングリッシュスタイルなどが含まれる。各スタイルで金・銀・銅のメダルが授与され、そこから各国のスタイル別の受賞者たちが「世界一のスタイル」の座をかけて戦う。そして最後は、各カテゴリーのスタイルチャンピオンたちが集まり、「ワールド・ベスト」の称号をかけた、白熱の最終決戦が待っているのだ。
もちろん、審査は世界各国から集まった審査員によって行われる。受賞者はその実力をきちんと評価され、公式サイト（www.worldbeerawards.com）で紹介されたり、ビールやマーケティング資料などに受賞シールを使うことができる。その受賞シール用のデザインやプロモーション素材も、WBAが各ブルワリー向けにカスタマイズして提供してくれる。ちなみに本大会で10年以上にわたって安定して好成績を収めている全国的に有名なブルワリーには、箕面ビールやスワンレイクビールがいるが、近年はそれ以外にも多くのブルワリーがその頭角を現している。

Japan has traditionally performed well on the world’s stage when it comes to beer competitions. That has been the case especially with the World Beer Awards, which has been giving out best-of-category awards since 2007. Many consumers in Japan may even recognize the award seals that more than a few Japanese breweries proudly display on their winning beer labels, social media posts, and marketing materials. This year’s competition is open for entries and we encourage breweries to take the challenge. Why? Read on…
This is a blind tasting competition with rigorous standards. In the first round (which takes place at the country level), judges choose Japan’s best for each style in ten different categories. For example, there are categories like “Dark Beer”, “IPA”, “Lager”, and “Specialty Beer”. Each of these categories is further divided into styles; for the IPA, they include the Imperial/Double-IPA, Session, American-style, English-style, etc. Gold, silver, and bronze medals are awarded. From there, country style winners compete to become the “World’s Best Style”. Then, in a fun but high-stakes free-for-all, all the best style winners in each category compete for the title of “World’s Best”.
Brewers of course receive evaluations from a panel of global judges. Winners of course receive the recognition they are due, which includes a listing on the worldbeerawards.com website and the right to proudly bear the award seal on beers and marketing material. As for the latter, WBA provides custom promotional materials for the breweries. A few of Japan’s nationally recognized breweries that have fared well in this competition for over a decade include Minoh Beer and Swan Lake, though there have been many others in recent years.
The deadline for submitting the entry paperwork is coming up on May 16th. The shipping deadline is May 27th, with winners announced on August 13th 2025.
