European Beer Star Competition

Europe is the origin of the world’s classic beer styles. Certainly, countries outside Europe have developed popular new categories—especially America—but these still evolved from European traditions. Germany, Czech Republic, Belgium, England—this is where it all began.

Innovation is great and we’re excited to see brewers expanding the possibilities for flavor, but we’re also pleased to see classic styles. It’s good for brewers to know their roots, and consumers also appreciate these beers. Classics don’t become classics by being bad, after all.

To show our support for classic European styles, once again this year (now our third year of cooperation) we would like to introduce European Beer Star. This competition is open to breweries all around the world, but focuses on beer styles that originate in Europe. This is hardly elitism; it’s a celebration of tradition!

EBS is now in its 11th year. In 2013, it accepted over 1500 beers from 40 countries, including Japan, which has generally enjoyed good results. Konishi Brewing and Tazawako Beer both won gold. An international panel of experienced judges chooses the winning beers based on quality and authenticity of style. The judges also provide detailed commentary, which is invaluable to brewers hoping to improve their beers. Take the challenge and enter!
