Long Root Hazy IPA

Patagonia Provisions recently revealed the newest addition to its series of Long Root beers, which we’ve previously reported on. For those unfamiliar with this innovative series, Patagonia Provisions is an offshoot of the world-famous outdoor company Patagonia, specializing in sustainably-sourced, ethical food and beverages. Its foray into the craft beer world began with its Long Root Pale Ale several years ago. It later followed with Long Root Wit and Long Root IPA. The company also did a collaboration with legendary brewery Dogfish Head on Kernza Pils. The beers are all designed around Kernza, a perennial grain with environmentally friendly characteristics.

The Long Root beers have been available for several years in Japan through multiple retailers, including Patagonia stores and from Patagonia Provisions in Japan. We should note that the beers aren’t just sustainably produced, but also quite good.

The newest in the series is the Long Root Hazy IPA and this is perhaps our favorite so far. Like its cousin, the Long Root IPA, it was brewed by the highly lauded Hopworks Urban Brewery (HUB) in the beer mecca of Portland, Oregon. The beer is a cheerful, hazy orange in color and features prominent citrus and tropical aromas on the nose. Tropical fruit comes through in the flavor as well. As far as IPAs go, its bitterness is not of the ‘in-your-face’ variety and it finishes moderately dry. Overall, there is excellent balance between the hops and malt flavor. At 6.2%abv, it’s got a punch, too–a nice reward after a long hike.

This new product, like the previous ones, can be purchased in cans at a variety of beer-specialty retailers across Japan, as well as from the Patagonia Provisions website. If you’re a bar or restaurant interested in draft, that’s also available via Ezo Beer (the importer).
