The rugged couple packed the essentials first: compass, Swiss army knife, first-aid kit, emergency flares, thermoses, iodine pills, condoms. They planned equally for weather extremes: raingear and sunscreen, thermal underwear and thong bathing suits, alpine goggles and sunglasses. They packed two walkie-talkies, should they be separated. Both attached hiking bells to their bags, to alert bears of their approach and not surprise them. In the event their food supplies were depleted, they would need to forage and fish. They packed fishing wire, hooks, a guide to identifying wild berries, mushrooms and tubers. He slid his father’s Zippo lighter from the war into a small pouch. She safely tucked away her late father’s Leica. Mosquito nets, climbing rope, hatchet, torch flashlight, maps, tweezers. Toothbrushes, toilet paper, soap. Ah, he thought, and threw in bungee cords. Ah, she thought, and threw in duct tape.

They took the earliest bullet train and eventually transferred to a local train that brought them to a rural station with a lone attendant. A bus carrying them and one other passenger slowly made its way up the winding mountain road. When they disembarked, she scanned their surroundings and exclaimed, over there! She pointed across the road to the mountain brewpub.

Wary of potential predators, they traversed the road and entered. They let their heavy bags slide from their shoulders and sat down. When their frothy mugs of beer arrived, she looked into his eyes and said, honey I’m so glad we came. Me too, he replied, let’s definitely do this again next year.

It’s summer, meaning travel season for many in Japan. Quit worrying about your preparations and just go! It’s too easy to get caught up in all the details when planning. If there’s beer where you’re going, the trip won’t be half bad.

We always try to feature at least one exciting travel destination in each issue. Travel and beer just seem to go hand in hand. For this summer edition we highlight four worthy places for you. In future issues we’ll certainly give you more. Thank you for reading.

Drink better, drink craft.

無骨なカップルが旅に必要なものを荷造りした。方位磁石、スイス・アーミーナイフ、救急箱、発煙筒、魔法瓶、経口ヨウ素剤、コンドーム。悪天候を想定して、雨具、日焼け止め、保温性の高い下着、ビキニ、登山用ゴーグル、サングラスも用意した。さらに、離ればなれになってしまったときのために無線機をふたつ、荷物に詰めた。熊に近づき過ぎて彼らを驚かせないように、熊除けのベルをバックパックに付けた。食料が尽きたときには、食べられるものを探したり魚釣りをすることになるかもしれない。釣り糸、釣り針、野生の苺やキノコや芋類を見分けるガイド本も持った。彼は、父親が戦争時に使い、譲り受けたジッポーをポーチに入れ、荷物に滑り込ませた。彼女は、父親のライカを荷物にしまい込んだ。蚊帳、登山用ロープ、斧、懐中電灯、地図、ピンセット、歯ブラシ、トイレットペーパー、石鹸。彼はバンジー用ロープを、彼女はダクトテープを付け足した。

早朝の新幹線に乗り、普通列車に乗り換え、駅員が一人の田舎の駅にたどり着いた。彼らの他には客が一人しかいないバスに乗り、曲がりくねった山道に揺られながら進んで行く。バスを降りたところで、彼女は周囲を見回し、あそこだわ！と大声で叫んだ。道路の向こう側、指差した先には山中のブルーパブがあった。

潜んでいる肉食獣に警戒しつつ、道路を横切り、店に入った。重たいバックパックをおろして席についた。泡ののったジョッキがテーブルに置かれた。彼女は彼を見つめて言った。「ハニー、私ここに来られて、とてもうれしいわ。」すると彼は「僕もだよ、来年もきっと来ようね。」と返した。

夏が来た。旅を楽しむ季節。準備の心配なんてしないで、さぁ出かけよう！プランを考えるのに、すぐ夢中になるだろう。行く先にビールがあるなら、悪くない。
