Beer Café Hopman is a craft beer bar par excellence in the famed Shonan Beach area, offering a classy environment, a huge selection of draft beers in excellent condition, and plenty of good nibbles if you’re hungry. Good for drinking solo, with friends, dates or a big party, Hopman likely won’t disappoint.
Of the 28 taps and two handpumps for real ale, most of the selection is Japanese craft beer (there is Ebisu and Hoeggarden on tap, too). Hopman offers a variety of serving sizes for very reasonable prices: small glass (300ml) from ¥680; US pints (470ml) from ¥980; medium glasses (500ml) also from ¥980; and large glasses (800ml~3000ml, yeah, we’re not kidding) from “you’ll need to ask.” Hopman usually carries a couple of imports, like U.S. West Coast beers, which are generally ¥1200 per pint—prices typical of Tokyo, but perhaps a harder sell in more rural Shonan. A large refrigeration unit behind the bar, where all the taps are also visible, keeps everything super-fresh. Owner Tashiro tastes everything to ensure that guests are getting good brews for their money.
Food at Hopman, cooked in the open kitchen behind the bar, is an eclectic mix of typical pub fare, tapas and snacks. Think single servings for quite reasonable prices—everything is well under ¥1000. Fried potatoes, chicken wings, fish & chips, sausages and shepherds pie are some items you would expect. But Hopman comes through with some creative food as well, like the spicy kimuchi pizza. “Today’s menu” features all the limited specialties, which are also varied in taste and style, with specialty sausages comprises the bulk of selections.
Hopman feels upscale. The staff are all dressed formally, and the sleek, minimalist interior exudes the feel of modern sophistication. The bar seats ten while tables seat about twenty. There are two standing tables for busy times. At a bar this good, busy times are not so unusual.
