Portland: A Talk with Red Gillen, of Brewvana Brewery Tours

What is the appeal of Portland as a craft beer destination?

Of course, there’s the fact that there are over 50 craft breweries here. Portland has more breweries than any other city in the world. Within a small area there are craft beers to meet everyone’s tastes: award-winning IPAs, stouts, pale ales, Belgians, German-style, even sour beers. There’s an incredible amount of passion, variety and experimentation among brewers. Some of the best breweries are smaller ones that are unheard of in Japan, like Breakside, Hopworks, Gigantic, Occidental, Lompoc. Even the bigger craft breweries (Widmer, Bridgeport) offer really fantastic brews. There are really too many to name.

This incredible selection has led to one of the deepest craft beer cultures I’ve ever encountered. Here, craft beer is not only for beer geeks; it’s truly appreciated by everybody. When a Portlander says, “let’s grab a beer” he or she is referring to craft beer. Macro beers are not part of the mindset.

What are the restaurant options like?

Portland has become one of the culinary centers of the United States. Like the brewers, the chefs here have a passion for their craft. Given Oregon’s agricultural abundance, much of the focus is on locally-sourced ingredients at their peak flavor, similar to the concept of shun in Japan. Even the craft breweries offer great food—much better than the typical “pub grub”.

Why tours for Japanese? What’s your relationship to Japan?

Many Japanese know that Portland is a kind of Beervana and want to try the great craft beers here. In the past there were no Japanese-language tours, which made it hard for Japanese to gain an insider’s view of the craft beer scene. Having lived in Japan for 8 years and learned to speak Japanese, I started the tours to make it possible for Japanese to enjoy craft beers just as Portlanders do. Japanese and Americans take the same tour. And, after a pint or so of craft beer, there is some pretty fun cross-cultural communication.

What else is there to do/see in the larger Oregon area?

In the state of Oregon, there are over 130 breweries. Almost every small city has a craft brewery. Great craft beer destinations include Bend, Hood River, Eugene, Newport and Astoria. Visiting the natural beauty of the coast, mountains, or Columbia Gorge on the way to these cities makes for a fantastic trip.
