Greetings: On the Occasion of the 10th Issue

The warriors clambered into the great mead hall, banging their shields with massive swords and battle axes. Fresh from victory, they had foodlust and wanted drink. Copious amounts of it. They sat at the long oak table and began pounding their fists to express their hunger, thirst and virile manhood. The fetid odor of sweat from their long march home filled the air. One warrior began to boast of the legions he had slaughtered, of the whores he had known. Another punched the lights out of him to show that he was manlier. The great length of his blood-caked beard further bespoke this fact.

A dainty eunuch in velvet clothing began to sing in a honey sweet voice of the conquest of great cities. Then slaves from those conquered cities brought forth silver platters of roast beast. Great frothy mugs that required two hands to carry began to appear, and were constantly refilled. The atmosphere changed from festive to raucous to raunchy. Burping and farting contests erupted. Bench hurling ensued. Two warriors started fighting over which would claim the eunuch for the evening. The eunuch slipped quietly out the back.

Without warning or fanfare, a lone figure arrived. The warriors stopped carousing and a silence settled throughout the hall. “To glory of our kingdom,” a warrior shouted, “our brewmaster!” A chorus of roars filled the room and all present clinked mugs together.

Sitting down at the end of the table in the great chair, she spoke, “Now let the real party begin.”

Who says women can’t be true masters of brewing? Certainly not the three featured in this issue! Beer has been traditionally associated with men and masculinity but all that is changing. All across the world, Japan included, women are taking greater roles in the beer industry. From brew masters to judges, owners to sales directors, they are showing that gender matters little to success. Female drinkers are on the rise, too, and represent a promising segment of growth for the craft beer industry. Kanpai to you!

We had planned to release this issue for Golden Week, but stopped the press when we got to the Craft Brewers Conference in America. We wanted to include an interview with a great brewer we met there, as well as other notes on this very special and important event.

Drink better, drink craft.
