Ushitora (Shimokitazawa)

Arguably the kings of craft beer in Western Tokyo, the two Ushitora bars–located basically beside each other–feature a total of 35 drafts and three real ales between them. Ushitora “one” and “two” don’t serve the same selections and their whole business approach is quite different, making both worth visiting. “One” is a more formal fusion restaurant with table seating and a large, elevated bar; “two” is a small, casual, stand-only joint serving kushiage.

Thankfully, both are committed to serving fine craft beer in excellent condition, as maintained by their refrigerated storage and server systems. There are few other places in Tokyo where you can find a greater range of selection. Some of their beers, in fact, you will find nowhere else. Excluding Ushitora’s house beers, which are usually hopped delights, a special import selection or two is generally guaranteed to make the thirsty beer pilgrim smile. Each bar usually serves a selection of draft sake, which you really should try out–save it for last. Prices for servings (pints and halfs) don’t always reflect the cost basis of the particular beer and seem to be all over the board, but even if you are paying more than the Tokyo average price for a pint, it all comes out in the wash if you’re getting some food, too.

Ushitora “two” is the budget epicurean’s dream. Although master “Tora” is not professionally trained in his art, he sure serves up some delicious kushiage (deep-fried, skewered edibles) for, literally, pocket change– you may get the bill and think you robbed him. The batter is light, crisp and never drowns out the deeper flavors, so those with an aversion to heavy foods need not be afraid. Just like the craft beer selection, there is often something unusual on the menu. Ask Tora-san for his recommendations. “Two” is more appropriate if want a proper sit-down meal with friends, colleagues or a date. If you’re coming solo there’s space at the bar. We’re always partial to the pizzas, but definitely explore the rest of the menu; salads, shepherd pies, and fried items like fish and chips provide for well-rounded meal.
